深圳少年儿童图书馆于一九九七年十一月五日正式成立。馆址在深圳市红荔路1011号，即原深圳图书馆所在地。现有中外藏书20余万册、报刊杂志1000 多种、电子文献1万多件，计算机、视听、文献扫描等设备近 100 台。为少年儿童读者及其工作者提供各种文献信息服务，每年举办各式各样的文化活动，深受广大青少年读者的欢迎。

　　建馆之后，文化部图书馆司领导，深圳市文化局领导、中国关心下一代工作委员会专家委员会、中国低幼儿童读物研究会、中国书画家协会、“华夏未来”基金会和日本、美国等国际友人曾多次光临我馆参观指导。与此同时，我馆在 1997 年承接了《中图法（儿童图书馆、中小学图书馆版）》第二版的编制组织、编辑工作；在 1999 年，我馆承办了“全国少年儿童图书馆工作研讨会议”，并负责编辑、出版《全国少年儿童图书馆工作研讨会议优秀论文选集》。我馆“中国少年儿童信息大世界——网上图书馆”工程项目被列为 2000 年度文化部科技计划，并经文化部教育科技司签署科技项目专项合同。“中国少年儿童信息大世界——网上图书馆”经过两年多时间的准备和努力，在 2002 年六一国际儿童节期间开通，对外发布；同时中国数字图书馆少年儿童中心馆和分馆成立和授牌仪式在深圳隆重举行。 鉴于深圳少年儿童图书馆在全国少儿信息资源建设中所做出的成绩与贡献，中国数字图书馆·中国数字图书馆有限责任公司正式于 2002年2月授权深圳少年儿童图书馆为“中国数字图书馆少年儿童中心馆”。至此，深圳少儿馆将负责在全国范围内建立一套少儿信息资源建设网络体系；组织发展各省市、自治区的中国数字图书馆少年儿童分馆；提出一套完整的少儿数字图书馆建设方案及规范标准体系。2004年，“中国少年儿童信息大世界——网上图书馆”已通过文化部专家委员会成果鉴定。鉴定委员会一致认为：该项目的建设是全国文化信息资源共享工程和中国数字图书馆建设工程的重要组成部分，创建了多馆共建少年儿童网上图书馆的模式，具有国内先进水平，填补了我国少年儿童网上图书馆的空白，为我国少年儿童网上图书馆建设做出了突出贡献。

　　此外，《中国图书馆图书分类法（儿童图书馆、中小学图书馆版）》分编辑委员会，中国图书馆学会少儿图书馆专业委员会、《中国少年儿童文献分类主题词表》编辑委员会均挂靠在本馆。

　　不久的将来，深圳少年儿童图书馆将成为建筑面积达一万三千多平方米，藏书六十多万册，并利用先进技术和方法进行管理的一所现代化少年儿童图书馆。

　　Founded on November 5, 1997, Shenzhen Children's Library is a large library in Shenzhen run by Shenzhen Municipal Government to provide information service to children, their parents and their instructors. It is located at 6 Hongli Road, the former site of Shenzhen Library. With the new site of Shenzhen Library still under construction, Shenzhen Children's Library has now opened only some of its reading-rooms to readers, providing partial service.

　　Now Shenzhen Children's Library has more than one hundred thousands books, and more than one thousand kinds of audio-visual materials. All of its reading-rooms that are open to readers fall into three parts: reading-room for preschoolers, their parents and teachers, reading-room of audio-visual materials, and reading-room for students. Using these reading-rooms, Shenzhen Children's Library provides reading service to preschoolers, primary school and middle school students, their parents and teachers, and also provides both cultural and arts training services to all the children in Shenzhen.

　　In the reading-room for preschoolers, their parents and teachers, there are varieties literature and reading materials, new and original in content, suitable for preschoolers, their parents and teachers. Toys are also available for preschoolers children. Teachers and parents can read together with children, making entertainment a medium of education.

　　The audio-visual reading-room is equipped with 16 sets of sophisticated reading equipment, and more than one thousand cassette of audio-visual materials, which is quite helpful to readers in enhancing their reading interest, broadening their vision field and obtaining new knowledge.

　　In the students' reading-room, there are many kinds of literature and reading materials suitable for students, which enables them to learn many things which they have no chance to learn in their classrooms. In this reading-room, there is also a sub-section of self-study where students can have self-study, review their lessons and consult reference books.

　　On every Saturday morning, English salon is arranged for many children who like studying English, to enhance their learning interest and to improve their English-speak ability. On major festival occasions, Shenzhen Children's Library will hold many cultural activities to enrich the cultural life of the children in Shenzhen.

　　A thousand li journey starts with the first step. Now Shenzhen Children's Library is still at its initial stage. In 2000, Shenzhen Children's Library will become the largest new-type children information center in China (with a floorage of more than ten thousands square meters), with the largest collection of books (1.2 million books), equipped with the most sophisticated equipment, providing comprehensive information service to children, children instructors and other people who need information about children. By that time, Shenzhen Children's Library will have opened more than 2,000 square meters of reading-rooms, approximately 1,000 square meters of reading practice rooms, and book exhibition sections with local cultural features of various provinces and regions in China. It will also set up a Children's Theatre with a seating capacity of 400, and a psychological clinic providing psychological consultant for children. Shenzhen Sub-center of China Children Literature Information Center, the Editorial Sub-Board of “China Library Books Classification” (the version of Children's Library and Primary/Middle school Students' Library), and Children's Library working Committee of China Library Society, all set up their headquarters at Shenzhen Children's Library. All these organizations will get in touch and co-operate with international organizations, providing the whole nation oriented service.
